6v6 Format

1. Game Overview

Summary

Format: 6v6 (six players per team on court)

Gender Requirement: Two girls must be on court at all times

Minimum Players: Games can start with 5 players

Scoring: Rally scoring to 25 points (win by 2)

Equipment & Court

Provided by Mellennial Sports:

  • Official volleyballs
  • Court nets and equipment
  • Scoreboards

Required by Players:

  • Athletic shoes (no marking shoes)
  • Appropriate athletic wear
  • Knee pads (recommended)

Match Format: Best of 3 games. First two games to 25 points (win by 2), third game to 15 points (win by 2). No cap on points.

2. Team Requirements & Substitution

Team Composition

Roster Size

  • 6 players on court
  • Any number of subs allowed

Gender Balance

  • 2 females required on court
  • Can play with more if desired

Minimum to Start

  • 5 players minimum
  • Must maintain 2 female rule

Substitution Rules

Free substitution allowed to any position

Sub must wait for dead ball to enter the court

No libero rule in effect

Substitution Process

  • • Signal the scorer before substituting
  • • Sub enters and exits between the attack line and the end line
  • • The same player cannot sub twice in one rotation

3. Gameplay Rules

Touch Rules

Maximum 3 touches per side before the ball must be returned over the net

Same player cannot hit the ball twice in a row (except on a block)

Contact off the block is not considered a touch

Double Contact Rule

If someone makes a double contact on a ball, the ball and serve go to the other team.

Scoring System

Points per game (Games 1-2)

Points for game 3 (if needed)

Rally Scoring

Points are awarded on every rally, regardless of who served. A team wins the rally, they score the point.

4. Serving Rules

Service Requirements

Server must serve from behind the end line

You cannot step on or over the end line when serving

Serve can hit the top of the tape and go over – it's fair play

Toss Rule

Toss Service

  • • If you toss the ball up, you must hit it
  • • You can redo the toss if it hits the ground
  • • Multiple toss attempts are allowed before committing to hit

Service Errors

Service Errors:

  • • Ball hits the net and doesn't go over
  • • Ball lands out of bounds
  • • Server steps on or over the end line
  • • Ball is served before whistle

Service Results:

  • • If serving team errors: receiving team gets point and serve
  • • Rally continues until one team scores
  • • Serving team rotates after each point scored

5. Net Rules & Violations

Net Contact

No Net Contact Allowed

You cannot touch the net at any time during play.

Penalty: If you touch the net, you lose the serve and the ball goes to the other team.

Reaching Over the Net

Cannot reach over the net to hit the ball

Must play the ball in the middle of the net or on your own side

After the ball crosses to your side, you may follow through over the net

Crossing Under/Over

Center Line Rules

  • • When blocking or attacking, your body cannot go under the net
  • • You cannot cross onto your opponent's side of the court
  • • You may touch the net if the ball carries you into it

Blocking

Block is the first contact with the ball at the net

Block does not count as a touch

Any number of players can participate in a block

6. Positions & Rotation

Rotation Rules

Rotation Requirement

  • • Players must rotate after each serve
  • • Rotation is clockwise: front-right → front-left → back-left → back-center → back-right → front-center
  • • All players must rotate together

Gender Balance During Rotation

  • • Must maintain 2 females on court at all times
  • • When subbing, ensure gender ratio is maintained
  • • Teams adjust rotation to keep required females playing

Back Row Rules

Back Row Attacking: Cannot jump in front of the 10ft line when attacking

You are allowed to jump over the 10ft line with feet planted behind it

Back Row Setters: Can jump in front of the 10ft line if they are setting (not attacking)

Court Positions

When serving, positions are not required. Once the serve is made, players must be in their rotational positions before crossing the net.

Key positions: Setter (controls offense), Hitters (outside, middle, opposite), Libero (defensive specialist - not used in this league)
